Improve reproductive health

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus (endometrial cavity). It involves the insertion of a thin, illuminated instrument called a hysteroscope through the cervix and into the uterus. This procedure is usually performed to diagnose or treat uterine problems, such as abnormal bleeding, fibroids, polyps, or infertility-related issues.

What is hysteroscopy and when is it indicated?

Hysteroscopy allows for a detailed examination of the uterine cavity, identifying changes that may not be visible through conventional imaging tests, such as ultrasound. It is indicated in situations such as:

  • ✔
Uterine bleeding — irregular periods, heavy bleeding, postmenopausal bleeding, or spotting between cycles
  • ✔
Uterine polyps and fibroids — benign growths that can cause symptoms and affect fertility
  • ✔
Intrauterine adhesions (Asherman's syndrome) — scar tissue inside the uterus
  • ✔
Congenital uterine malformations — septate uterus or other structural anomalies
  • ✔
Infertility or recurrent miscarriages — investigation of uterine factors that may be compromising pregnancy
  • ✔
Follow-up after previous treatments — verification of the effectiveness of previous procedures or interventions

Hysteroscopy can be diagnostic — when the goal is to observe and evaluate — or operative, when it is possible to treat the identified cause during the same procedure, avoiding a second surgery.

How is the procedure performed at Clínica AEGER Prima?

The procedure is performed in a clinical setting, under local, regional, or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the case and the patient's preference. The hysteroscope is carefully inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterine cavity, which is slightly distended with saline solution or gas to improve visibility. The doctor examines the entire uterine cavity and, when necessary, performs treatment, such as removal of polyps, submucous fibroids, or adhesions, at the same time. The duration of the procedure usually ranges from 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the complexity. In most cases, the patient can return home on the same day.

What are the benefits of hysteroscopy?

Accurate and direct diagnosis:

Allows for real-time visualization of the uterine cavity, identifying changes that other tests may not detect with the same clarity.

Diagnosis and treatment in the same procedure:

In many cases, it is possible to treat the identified cause without the need for a second surgery.

Minimally invasive:

Does not require external incisions, reducing the risk of complications and recovery time.

Quick recovery:

Most patients resume their normal activities within a few days.

Improved reproductive health:

Resolving uterine abnormalities can significantly increase the chances of pregnancy in women with infertility or recurrent miscarriages.

Relief of symptoms:

Heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, and other symptoms associated with uterine abnormalities can improve significantly after treatment.

What is evaluated during hysteroscopy?

01. Uterine bleeding

The doctor evaluates the cause of irregular, heavy, or prolonged menstrual bleeding, postmenopausal bleeding, or bleeding outside the menstrual period, identifying the origin of the problem with precision.

02. Uterine anomalies

Are evaluated for the presence of polyps, submucous fibroids, intrauterine adhesions, or congenital malformations that may be causing symptoms or affecting fertility.

03. Factors of infertility and recurrent miscarriages

Investigates potential uterine causes that may be compromising embryo implantation or pregnancy maintenance, contributing to a more targeted therapeutic plan.

04. Post-procedure follow-up

After hysteroscopy, the gynecologist discusses the results, treatments performed, and recommendations for recovery, as well as the long-term follow-up plan with the patient.

Frequently asked questions

Hysteroscopy in Lisbon

Is hysteroscopy painful?

The level of discomfort varies from patient to patient and depends on the type of anesthesia used. With local anesthesia, some patients may feel mild cramps during the procedure, similar to those experienced during a heavy period. With general anesthesia or sedation, the procedure is painless. The doctor will choose the most suitable option for each case.

How long does recovery take?

Diagnostic hysteroscopy has a very quick recovery, with most patients resuming normal activities the next day. After operative hysteroscopy, rest may be necessary for 1 to 3 days. It is normal to feel some mild pelvic discomfort and light bleeding in the first 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. It is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse for 1 to 2 weeks after the procedure, or as indicated by the gynecologist. This period is necessary to ensure proper healing of the cervix and uterine cavity.

Can hysteroscopy improve fertility?

In cases where infertility is related to uterine factors, such as polyps, adhesions, or malformations, hysteroscopy can contribute to improving uterine conditions and, consequently, increasing the chances of pregnancy. The results always depend on each specific clinical case, and the doctor will discuss realistic expectations during the consultation.

Are there risks associated with hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is considered a safe procedure. Complications are rare and may include infection, mild bleeding, or, in very exceptional cases, uterine perforation. The risk is significantly reduced when the procedure is performed by an experienced specialist in an adequate clinical setting.

Do I need special preparation before hysteroscopy?

In some cases, the doctor may recommend that the procedure be performed at a certain stage of the menstrual cycle, for better visualization of the uterine cavity. Analysis or pre-examinations may also be requested. All specific indications will be provided during the evaluation consultation.

What is evaluated during hysteroscopy treatment?

01.

Abnormal bleeding:

Evaluates the cause of irregular or abundant menstrual bleeding, post-menopausal bleeding or spotting.

02.

Uterine abnormalities:

Evaluates the presence of polyps, fibroids, adhesions or congenital anomalies in the uterus.

03.

Fertility concerns:

Investigates potential uterine factors that contribute to infertility or recurrent miscarriages.

04.

Post-procedure expectations:

Discusses the conclusions and results of the treatment, as well as addresses any questions about recovery and long-term results.
