Gastric balloon placement

A minimally invasive solution for healthy weight loss

The gastric balloon is one of the most effective non-surgical treatments for weight loss, indicated for people with excess weight or obesity who are seeking a less invasive solution than bariatric surgery. It is a temporary medical device placed in the stomach through endoscopy, which occupies space and reduces gastric capacity, promoting an earlier and longer feeling of fullness.

In the AEGER Prima Clinic, in Lisbon, the gastric balloon placement is performed by experienced gastroenterologists, integrated into a nutritional and clinical follow-up program that maximizes results and supports the patient in all stages of the process.

What is the gastric balloon and when is it indicated?

The gastric balloon is a soft silicone device inserted empty into the stomach through an endoscope (without the need for surgery or incisions) and later filled with saline solution or gas, until it reaches the appropriate volume. This volume occupies part of the gastric space, which reduces the amount of food needed to reach fullness. It is especially indicated for people who:

  • ✔
Have excess weight or obesity (usually with a BMI between 27 and 35, although the exact value depends on the medical evaluation)
  • ✔
Have already tried to lose weight through diet and exercise without sustained success
  • ✔
Are not, for now, candidates for bariatric surgery, or prefer a less invasive approach
  • ✔
Intend to prepare the body before bariatric surgery, reducing surgical risks associated with excess weight
  • ✔
Seek additional support to initiate more lasting lifestyle changes

The gastric balloon is not indicated for all people. Cases of active inflammatory bowel disease, large hiatal hernia, previous gastric surgeries, or certain psychiatric conditions may contraindicate the procedure, which is why prior medical evaluation is indispensable.

How is the procedure performed at the AEGER Prima Clinic?

The gastric balloon placement is done by upper digestive endoscopy, usually under light sedation, and has a duration of approximately 20 to 30 minutes. The gastroenterologist introduces the deflated balloon through the mouth to the stomach, filling it with sterile saline solution to the previously defined volume.

No incisions, stitches, or prolonged hospitalization are necessary; most patients return home on the same day, with a short period of rest.

The balloon remains in the stomach for a period usually between 6 and 12 months, depending on the type of device used, and is then removed through a new endoscopic procedure.

Before placement, a comprehensive evaluation consultation is performed, where the doctor analyzes the medical history, necessary complementary exams (such as upper digestive endoscopy and laboratory tests), and defines, together with the patient, the nutritional follow-up plan that accompanies the entire treatment.
