The beginning of pregnancy is one of the most exciting and, at the same time, most delicate moments in a woman's life. Early obstetric ultrasound, performed between 6 and 12 weeks of gestation, is the first major step to ensure that everything is developing in a healthy way. This exam allows confirming pregnancy, determining gestational age with precision, evaluating the embryo's heartbeats, and excluding complications such as ectopic pregnancy.
What is Early Obstetric Ultrasound?Early obstetric ultrasound is a non-invasive and completely safe imaging examination for both the mother and the baby. Using ultrasound waves, the equipment creates detailed images of the uterus and the developing embryo, allowing the doctor to assess a set of essential parameters for initial pregnancy monitoring. This examination is especially recommended in situations such as:
How is Early Obstetric Ultrasound Performed? The examination is performed in a simple and comfortable manner. The pregnant woman lies in a dorsal decubitus position and the doctor applies a conductive gel to the abdomen. The ultrasound probe is then moved gently over the skin, capturing real-time images of the inside of the uterus. In some cases, namely in the earliest weeks of gestation (between 6 and 8 weeks), a transvaginal ultrasound may be necessary to obtain images with greater clarity and detail. In this case, a specific probe of reduced dimensions is used, which is introduced into the vagina. The procedure is painless and equally safe. The examination usually lasts between 15 to 30 minutes. At the end, the pregnant woman receives a detailed report with the images obtained and the doctor's conclusions.
The examination checks for the presence of the gestational sac inside the uterus, confirming the existence of pregnancy in an unequivocal manner.
Through the measurement of the embryo's cranium-caudal length, it is possible to calculate the gestational age with great precision and establish the probable date of delivery.
From the 6th week of gestation, it is possible to observe and record the embryo's cardiac activity, a moment of great emotion for future parents and a fundamental indicator of fetal health.
The examination confirms that the pregnancy is developing in the uterus, ruling out the possibility of ectopic pregnancy, a situation that requires urgent medical intervention.
Ultrasound allows identification of whether it is a single or multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets), essential information for defining the appropriate follow-up plan.
Beyond the embryo, the doctor also evaluates the state of the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes, identifying any changes such as ovarian cysts or fibroids that may impact the pregnancy.
Performing this examination at the beginning of pregnancy brings concrete benefits to the health of the mother and the baby:
Early detection of problems allows for faster and more effective intervention.
Confirming that the baby is healthy and has a beating heart is a moment of relief and joy that many mothers describe as unforgettable
Knowing the exact gestational age and the number of embryos allows for personalized and rigorous planning of pregnancy monitoring.
The data collected in this ultrasound serve as a comparison basis for all subsequent exams throughout pregnancy.
