A gastric balloon is a weight loss solution that involves placing a soft, inflatable balloon in the stomach to reduce its capacity, helping you feel full more quickly and stay full longer. It is considered safe and a less invasive alternative to weight loss surgery. The balloon remains in the stomach for a period, usually several months, during which it helps you eat smaller portions, consume fewer calories, and achieve significant weight loss. After this period, the balloon is deflated and removed via endoscopy or, in the case of the Allurion balloon, exits the body naturally.

Placement is done in an outpatient visit lasting less than 20 minutes. The Allurion is the first gastric balloon that does not require endoscopy* or anesthesia for its placement or removal. You only need to swallow a capsule with the deflated balloon attached to a catheter: once the balloon is confirmed to be in your stomach by X-ray, it is filled with water through the catheter. A second X-ray is taken to ensure the balloon is correctly inflated.

We understand that swallowing the balloon or the sensation of vomiting can be a source of anxiety for some people. However, 99.99% of patients are able to swallow the capsule. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule on your own, your doctor can help guide it down, stiffening the catheter. This procedure helps avoid the sensation of vomiting and allows for quick placement of the capsule in the stomach.

After placement, which lasts less than 20 minutes, you can resume your normal life; however, you may experience some symptoms for a few days, including nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps. Your healthcare professional will advise you on post-placement care and nutrition, as well as the best plan to return to activities such as gym and exercise.

No. After approximately 16 weeks, the balloon deflates and is naturally expelled. In very rare cases, intervention may be necessary.

After approximately 16 weeks with the Allurion Program, several clinical studies have shown that patients lose an average of 10-15% of their total body weight. If you want to lose more weight, you can place a second balloon after completing the first program.

Up to 96% of the lost weight can be maintained for 12 months after the balloon is expelled from the body!
