Objectives of psychological counseling

There are times when we can feel that something is not quite right, even if we can't exactly explain what's happening.

Feelings of fear, sadness, insecurity, difficulties in relationships or in dealing with certain situations may arise. At other times, we may simply notice that there are patterns that repeat themselves and that we would like to understand better.

Psychological counseling can be a space to stop, understand what's happening, and find new ways to deal with difficulties, always respecting the pace and individuality of each person.

Who are the consultations for?

We mainly accompany adults who are going through emotional, relational, or life-changing difficulties.

A space to understand what's happening

Sometimes, seeking help doesn't start with knowing exactly what the problem is or what needs to change. It simply starts with recognizing that something deserves our attention. Psychological counseling aims to provide a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space where you can talk about what you're going through, understand yourself better, and build, at your own pace, new ways to deal with yourself, your emotions, your relationships, and the challenges of your life.

Clinical evaluation

What are the objectives of psychological counseling?

The objectives of psychological counseling are not the same for everyone.

The process is built together, based on understanding what's happening, identifying difficulties, and achieving the changes that the person wants to make.

Throughout the consultations, we can work on:

01

Understanding what's happening better

Giving meaning to emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and situations that are causing suffering or difficulty.

02

Identifying patterns

Noticing certain ways of thinking, feeling, acting, or relating that may be repeating themselves and contributing to discomfort.

03

Developing new strategies

Finding more adjusted ways to deal with difficult situations, intense emotions, thoughts, or daily challenges.

04

Promoting self-awareness

Recognizing and understanding one's own needs, limits, values, and ways of functioning.

05

Promoting greater emotional autonomy

The goal is not to create dependence on psychological counseling but to help the person develop resources that they can use outside of counseling and throughout their life.

Frequently asked questions

Common doubts about psychological counseling

Do I need to know exactly what my problem is before booking a consultation?

No. Many people come to the consultation without being able to identify exactly what's happening. There may be only a feeling of discomfort, anxiety, sadness, confusion, or the perception that something needs to change. Understanding what's happening better is also part of the therapeutic process.

Will I have to tell everything in the first consultation?

No. The therapeutic relationship is built progressively throughout the sessions, and each person has their own pace. There is no obligation to talk immediately about topics for which you are not yet prepared.

Will the psychologist tell me what I should do?

Psychological counseling does not consist of telling the person how they should live their life or make decisions for them. The therapeutic work aims to help the person understand what's happening better, explore different perspectives, and develop resources so they can deal with their difficulties and make decisions in a more conscious and autonomous way.

Is everything I say in the consultation confidential?

Confidentiality is a fundamental principle of psychological practice. The information shared in the consultation is protected by professional secrecy, within the limits of ethics and laws applicable to the practice of Psychology.

How long does psychological counseling last?

There is no set number of sessions for everyone. The duration of the counseling depends on various factors, including the difficulties presented, the objectives defined, the evolution of the process, and individual needs. The objectives and evolution can be reviewed throughout the counseling.

Do I need to be very ill to seek a psychologist?

No. Psychology is not only for crisis situations or when there is a psychological disorder. You can seek counseling when you feel that something is causing you suffering, when you're going through a difficult phase, or simply when you want to understand what you're going through better.

How do I know if therapy is working?

Change doesn't always happen quickly or in a linear fashion. Over the course of therapy, you may begin to develop a greater understanding of what you feel, think, and do, as well as a greater ability to recognize certain patterns and, progressively, new ways of dealing with difficulties. The evolution and objectives of therapy can and should be discussed during the sessions themselves.
